Oxytocin and the Spirit of Giving

I heard the following story from Sahil Bloom this morning:

“A teacher asked her students to write their names on a balloon and release them in her classroom. Thirty balloons jumbled around in the air. She then gave the students one minute to find the balloon that had their name on it. After a minute passed, none were able to find their balloon. The teacher then asked the students to take the first balloon they found and give it to the person whose name was on it. Within seconds, everyone had their balloon.

The teacher then explained: These balloons represent your happiness. Focus on your own happiness, and you may never find it. Focus on helping others find their happiness, and you will find yours as well.

I like it because we are interdependent. That means we have the ability to help others. We can’t do everything for ourselves, all the time, no matter what. At some point, you need help!

In his book Leaders Eat Last, Simon Sinek explains the way different hormones work in our body. He talks about Dopamine, Endorphins, Serotonin, Oxytocin, and cortisol. The way he described Oxytocin surprised me. Oxytocin is the healthiest hormone for your mind and body? Do you know how it releases?

Generosity. Imagine the feeling you get when you give someone a gift they love. How do you feel when you “Make someone’s day?”

We are meant to be generous. Our bodies react to it so well, you feel good!
