A great Legacy has great relationships. Great relationships have great rapport.
What do you think about when you think “Rapport”?
Sales? Trust? Communication? I weird word that means people like me?
The other day I was having a salad across from a friend. The salad was right in front of me, and I couldn’t seem to make progress on it because I was talking too much. I tried to ask questions so that I can eat! BUT, I couldn’t do it, he asked too many good questions and listened to darn well that I had to settle for slow lunch.
Rapport is harmony in a relationship. Like a song in tune.
We are such a distracted generation that when you find this rapport between people it’s like a gift. How can you give the gift of rapport to people?
Match and Mirror.
Match and mirror as many things as you can from the other person.
- Tone – Are they speaking excitedly, upbeat, or depressed and sad?
- Speed – Do they speak quick or slow?
- Volume – Are they speaking loud or soft?
- Posture – How are their arms and legs? Are they leaning in or out?
- Expressions – what are their unique expressions?
- Eye contact – not too much or too little.
This works because we like people who are like us.
You’re action item is simple. In your next conversation pay attention to the above items and test your ability to match and mirror. Give the gift of rapport!
