What do you Want?

Dumbest question ever.

Maybe…

I think of stories like Steve Jobs who had a vision and pursued it over decades to get what he wanted, technology that was beautiful and accessible to customers.

I don’t think that’s the norm. We typically fumble and tumble along towards our Legacy.

Why is it so hard to answer the question, “What do you want?”

  1. Fear of what _____ (person) will think.
  2. Too many options, how do I pick one?
  3. Fear of being disappointed with my pick.
  4. I straight up don’t know!

Here’s where I experience this:

  • As a manager, what do I want from my reports?
  • As a husband, what do I want from my wife?
  • As a son, what do I want from my father?
With my time, what do I want?
  • With my money, what do I want?

Here’s my helpful tactic:

What do you NOT want.

Example:

What do I NOT want to do with my time?

  1. Pointless meetings.
  2. Pointless tasks.
  3. Taylor Swift concerts.

Sorry, Taylor.

The point is, I now have 3 things to avoid and I’m closer to using my time better.

Why does this work?

We are better at seeing avoiding pain than we are pursuing pleasure.

Try it.
