Yesterday I talked about Cincinnatus and the legacy he left. Today I want to share about another leader who left an impressive legacy.
George Washington
Washington led the Continental Army until America reached peace with Britain in 1783. He was the commander and chief and had the support and loyalty of the military. It would be very easy to hold onto that. Imagine having the power of an entire military at your disposal.
A few weeks later he resigned.
King George III reportedly told the American-born artist Benjamin West: “If [Washington] does that, he will be the greatest man in the world.”
Washington surrendered his power.
What did Washington say when he resigned?
“Having now finished the work assigned me, I retire from the great theatre of action, and bidding an affectionate farewell to this august body, under whose orders I have so long acted, I here offer my commission, and take my leave of all the employments of public life.”
In 1787, The United States of America called him back and made him the first president.
I share this story and the story of Cincinnatus in hopes that your inspired by their actions. I want to see more leaders like this. Leadership is a responsibility and service to others!
Live a meaningful life. Have an impact beyond you. Leave a legacy.
