Monday an employee called in sick. That sucks, but typically we’ve got back ups. Well, the backups were vacationing. That mean’s I’m the backup.
Owning a business or leading in a business has this pressure point. You have the responsibility to get the stuff done. When your team is out, you’re in. You go from coach to player.
I think the best coaches were at least decent players. You could test this theory by seeing what the background is of every professional coach. I bet they were once a player. The reason for this (I think) is because you know what the player is thinking and feeling and as a coach you give direction and help players realize their potential. The coach who does this best wins.
When I am called into the field I get PISSED because I have to stop what I’m doing and cover someone I hired to do a job. WTF. But something that has helped me is to reframe it as an opportunity to see through the eye’s of my employee.
I felt what he felt, experienced what he experienced, and hopefully I’ve become a better coach because of it. At the very least I had a decent day doing something I wouldn’t normally enjoy.
Cheers!
