What Makes a Good Leader?

What’s better, competence or character?

Sure, you want both, but let’s say you have a block of wood to work with. One’s competent and one’s high character. Which do you choose to work with?

Competence is the ability to do the job. This person does work at a high level. They have experience, skill, and ability.

Character is the ability to do right and wrong well. This person is who we call “good”.

When you need a new leader or a replacement, who do you go for?

My vote is to go for the high character.

I trust high character man to become skilled more that I trust a skilled man to become high character.

Here’s my list to help you think about traits to look for.
