When Power Corrupts

The bible tells the story of Joseph and Mary having to escape to Egypt to avoid the decree of King Herod. Herod kills all boys under two years of age. He did this because he heard about the birth of a new king, Jesus.

Matthew writes this to point out the prophecy fulfilled showing Jesus as the true king of Israel. More than king, he aims to show him as savior. More than savior, God incarnate.

Thats cool.

So that’s the big story, but I want to focus on Herod. The prospect of a new king, Jesus, terrified him. Imagine if you had control of an area and you began to hear rumors of a ruler that all your people were going to follow. It wasn’t going to go well for you.

Herod responds by trying to kill all boys. And that’s when you know your power has corrupted you. You are willing to kill thousands of innocent boys, if not more, to keep your power.

As a leader, you have little kingdoms where you rule. It might called job, or family, or community, or organization where you have influence. Do you hope to have a position like this? If so, this is for you.

A great leader allows others to become great. A master leader helps them become better than the master.

When I see someone under me or equal to me become greater, how do I respond? Do I get excited for them? Do I become sad? Envious?

Am I helping others become greater than me?
