I met again with Joe Fribourg and have compiled a number of lessons that I gathered from our meeting. These are personal to me, but you can personalize them for yourself.
Here are the notes I grabbed from our meeting:
1. Help the team understand the vision:
a. The way I am understanding this is to be breaking down the vision into consumable pieces for the team (Like a math equation). Jerry’s (our visionary) vision may be grand but broken down a person can see what they need to do today while being excited about the future grand vision.
b. When we talk about meeting metrics and achieving the “scorecard numbers”; we are talking about taking steps towards a bigger goal / picture broken down.
c. I have to bridge between vision and the how.
d. Do the hard thinking. It’s easy to get excited about a future goal, it’s hard and time consuming to map it out and think through the obstacles that will have to be overcome.
2. Your standard is what you tolerate. Raise your standards.
a. When Jerry (visionary) hears an issue he thinks about the customer, the contractor, but even more so the standard that is set. I have to have that same standard to carry on that vision / mission from Jerry.
b. People are better imitators. They mimic what they see more than what I say. (Perhaps learned best when you have children).
3. Where do you (Dakota) need to be if the company is 10x – 15x its size?
a. One of the gaps I recognized is I lack accountability and need to fill that gap
b. What other gaps are there in me that prevent me from getting me to that 10x – 15x place?
